Sit Still and Be
Occasionally I find myself with this intense desire to just sit and be.
Typically this desire arises in nature when I am in the middle of enjoying creation. I’ll sit down, observe my surroundings, and just be. The beauty of these moments is that the quieter and more still I become, the louder, and more actively I hear God speaking. We were created for a relationship with our Heavenly Father, and the Bible describes His voice as “still” and “small,” so naturally it makes sense that for us to hear His voice clearly, we need to be still and quiet, focussing on His goodness. I must clarify that God does speak in the hustle and bustle. In fact, some of the times that I hear Him clearest is when I’m working, but the moments where I still and quiet myself are when His voice seems magnified.
Growing up on Maui, then ending up in Colorado, and now living in the Texas Hill Country, I’ve had the opportunity to enjoy some of the very best landscapes the world has to offer. I’ve seen places that will all but knock you out of breath, and yet, even in the grandeur of some of those places, it’s often the simplest places that God uses to speak the most. I was sitting by a small creek in the Texas Hill Country late last month, and had an amazing moment with God, just enjoying His presence and listening intently to what He was saying. I won’t go into detail about what He was sharing with me, but just having the opportunity to sit quietly before the Lord and listen impacted and changed my whole day.
It can be easy for us to neglect our relationship with God when life gets busy, but it’s then that we need it the most. If we get consumed by all of the things we’re doing (even if those things are things that God has created us to do), we can miss out on the intimacy and relationship God wants to have with us personally. When life gets busy, it’s a cue that we need to slow down and get still and quiet with our Heavenly Father.
It’s been my experience that when I’m overwhelmed and I choose to slow down, and just be with my Father that everything finds its place,
and my perspective changes so that I can accomplish my “things” with God. The reality is that the things God created us to do, He’s created us to do with Him. That’s why it’s so important to prioritize intimacy with Him.
Find a creek to sit by, a hill to look out from, or a tree to sit under, and just relax in God’s presence. Slow down, be quiet, and enjoy having relationship with Him. You were created for it.
